The Durham Museum
I really didn’t know what to expect at Omaha’s Durham Museum, and you should know that I’m NOT a history buff. That being said, this museum truly brought history to life for my family and I! The building itself is a masterpiece, as it was built as a train station in art deco style in 1931. You will feel like you are reliving that time period as you step aboard the actual train cars in the lower level! With all the trains that chug through our part of the state, I feel it’s safe to say that children growing up in Boone/Story Counties might have a higher-than-average fondness for trains. This adoration continues to be fed with the large model train display 
and hands-on demos for kids to get a feel for how steam locomotives work.
Also on the lower level, plan to easily spend an hour in the brand-new Design Zone exhibit! This display will only be here until mid-September, and has been rated as one of the top ten exhibits to see nationwide!
It is a kid’s dream come true, as EVERYTHING is meant to be touched & explored! All ages will enjoy manipulating the materials, and older children (and adults) will get their ‘wheels turning’ to figure out the science behind it! Favorite stations for my 10 & 8 year old sons include designing a roller coaster, 
three-way bike race, 
and creating a laser light show!
Everyone likes money, right? Well, the Byron Reed coin collection will amaze you! It includes currency from both U.S. and other countries.
My husband and I could have spent much more time reading about the rare pieces here, but since we had already walked for five hours at the zoo…our boys were fading. We certainly didn’t see everything in all of Durham’s galleries. I should have thought to get them a sweet treat at the 1931 Soda Fountain & Candy Counter to bide ourselves a little more time!
